Is hypothyroidism the most incorrectly diagnosed and treated health concern in America? Are there natural thyroid solutions to an under-performing thyroid?
Millions live with cold body temperatures, sluggish bowels, falling hair, infertility and stubborn weight gain, but have been told their thyroid is “fine”. Or, they are told to take ever-increasing doses of thyroid medication (without seeing lasting results).
In a recent Primal Diet – Modern Health radio podcast on the thyroid, I discuss diagnosis with guest Mary Vance from Nutrition Divas. Listen to the podcast on iTunes or from this link and be ready to take some notes! We discuss diagnosis tips and treatment options far beyond taking synthetic thyroid hormone for the rest of your life.
In many cases of low thyroid function, it may be that the adrenals are really the problem. If your adrenals are exhausted, your body will deliberately down-regulate the thyroid to keep you from burning out. Saliva testing will reveal your adrenal status far better than a blood cortisol test, but few doctors know about it. Order the test online or find a natural health practitioner to work with you. Rebuild those adrenals and the thyroid may perk right up!
Systemic inflammation from grains and antibodies to gluten can cause auto-immune attacks on the thyroid. I have seen many cases of improvement in Hashimoto’s in clients eating a Paleo Diet or low-carb diet. Gluten-free is often not enough. My DVD will explain this in just over an hour.
Dental work by a Biological Dentist may be required to help fix your hormones if you have mercury amalgams in your mouth, or if your gold crowns cover an amalgam filling. Mercury binds up hormone receptors and prevents the hormone from acting in the body. It is a direct neuro-toxin as well.
One of the main points in my radio podcast is that there are many types of thyroid dysfunction. Only one of these may actually require prescription hormone. If the thyroid is actually not producing enough hormone, and there are no other reasons for it (low iodine, mercury, gluten antibodies, poor conversion of T4 to T3, etc.), then natural thyroid may be a great option. T4 may work better if a low dose of Slow Release T3 is added, but most docs have not heard of it. Do some research, listen to the show, and be prepared for your next appointment, including having a good read of “Why Do I Still Have Symptoms If My Lab Tests Are Normal”. It’s a fantastic book!
In our online store, we also sell two great supplements that support the thyroid. Our Thyroid Metabolism Plus Iodine (TMI) contains hard-to-find natural iodine sources plus nutrients for the thyroid while our Gf thyroid builds and balances the thyroid gland without stimulating it and supports it’s natural function. Learn more about TMI here or Gf Thyroid here.
