I’ve had several bouts in the last 18 months. Getting up at night and falling to the right, dizzy, unable to orient spatially. It’s scary and a danger for falling.
Sometimes Vertigo is diagnosed as BPPV – Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Vertigo includes dizziness but is not the same as “dizzy spells”. Dizziness and disorientation can be signs of a Stroke as well.
Vertigo vs. Dizziness
Dizziness can be related to:
- Low blood pressure due to meds or Adrenal Fatigue
- Medication side effects
- Hunger (low blood sugar)
- Poor circulation
- Medical issues
Vertigo is a spinning sensation that yes, is dizzying, but is generally related to Inner Ear, Eyes or Sensory Nerves issues. Sensors in the Brain tell the body where it is in space – where is the floor, where are my feet. With Vertigo, inputs are disturbed and the body feels as if it is spinning.
This can be for brief bursts or can last for longer term, aggravated by certain positions of the head.
Treating Vertigo with an ENT Doctor
An ENT Doctor will differentiate between various causes of Vertigo, including BPPV, “Cerebral” Vertigo, and other Central Nervous System and circulation issues. Muscle spasms in the neck can be a trigger too. They can perform a series of tests known as Vestibular Testing to help understand the problem and suggest support.
The most common treatment performed by Chiropractors, ENT’s, and some Physical Therapists is the Epley Maneuver: a short series of head turning exercises designed to rotate the Calcium particles (Otoliths) in your inner ear back to their proper place. The treatment is usually effective but may need multiple repeats.
NOTE: the maneuver is done when the Vertigo is occurring, not on a scheduled basis (according to my doctor). She suggested I call ASAP if an episode occurs again and be driven in to see her then.
Natural Help for Vertigo at Home
There are many videos and PDF’s on the web showing how to do the Epley at home. They don’t all agree exactly but it’s worth a try while you are having an episode.
Caution: if you have a fragile neck and back (as I do) you can injure yourself doing these alone. A strong helper to lift and turn you is advised. Follow directions carefully after reading several versions.
Chiropractic Help for Vertigo
I had three episodes of vertigo lasting 3 to 5 days before I could see my Chiropractor. The acute “spinning” and balance issue softened to a general “wobbliness” and poor balance. The spinning flared up briefly when lying down and then standing again.
I treated myself with Homeopathic Remedies (see next section) to help until a Chiropractic visit was possible.
The top Vertebrae in your neck is called the Atlas. It has a direct influence on many Brain functions as well as neck pain. My chiropractor ended that episode of Vertigo with one adjustment. Chiropractic is natural help for Vertigo if it is related to the neck, as mine is.
Most doctors are not aware how helpful Chiropractic can be for Vertigo. One word of advice: don’t sign up for a series of sessions if you are new to Chiropractic. Try to find a doc using Applied Kinesiology (Muscle Testing) and an Activator or ArthroStim for adjustments (rather than hand adjustments).
Homeopathy for Vertigo
I am a true fan of Homeopathy. I am considered a beginner as I only had 5 years of training in this complex medical art (and decades of practice since). But I have remedies at home (and the Clinic) and I know how to repertorize to find the best possible match for a given issue.
These inexpensive remedies are often available at health food stores. If not, they are on the web. I find them safe and effective.
The top two remedies that helped me are Calcium Carbonate (Calcarea Carbonica) and Conium. I used Calc Carb 30C potency 2 – 3 times daily for 2 days then changed to Conium 30C. I felt improvement from both and was able to wait the 3 days to get to the Chiropractor more comfortably and safely.
The other top two remedies are Phosphorus 30C and Bryonia 30C.
If you struggle with occasional Vertigo, keep all four of these on hand. Try them one at a time. Change to another if it does not help within 24 hours.
CAUTION: Don’t use these remedies more than a few days. They are not long-term supplements.
When to See an ENT for Vertigo
See an ENT soon to evaluate your Vertigo symptoms. They need to do testing and get you in the system so they can help you when acute. The danger of falling is very real. And not being able to safely drive…
When making appointments, ask if a specific doctor in the practice deals with Vertigo patients.
