You may already know that elevated uric acid causes gout – a painful inflammation of the joints, especially hands and feet. But did you know that a uric acid blood test can be used as a marker for fructose toxicity?
One of the by-products of fructose metabolism is uric acid, so when you consume too much table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, agave nectar, sweetened sodas, or fruit juices, your uric acid levels rise.
Elevated uric acid is thought to explain much of the damage fructose causes in your body.
Fructose increases uric acid in the body AND it reduces the body’s ability to excrete it. It’s a double hit. And of course, fructose, being a sugar, causes elevated glucose, insulin resistance and ultimately, diabetes.
The connection between fructose consumption and increased uric acid can be used as a marker for fructose toxicity. A uric acid blood test should be a routine part of your annual blood screening, along with Vitamin D, Ferritin and basic Metabolic Panels. If I see uric acid elevated on your blood work, I know you’ve been cheating on your diet!
What should my Uric Acid blood test show?
The safest range for uric acid now appears to be between 3 and 5.5 milligrams per deciliter, and there is a definite relationship between uric acid levels, fructose, blood pressure and cardiovascular risk, including strokes. With two-thirds of the U.S. population overweight, most of these people likely have uric acid levels in excess of 5.5. Some may even be closer to 9 or higher.
The solution? The Diet For Human Beings — eat what your body evolved to eat. Hunt (animals and fats) and gather (vegetables, nuts, and a little fruit). Drink water, not sodas, alcohol, juice, or sweet tea…..
The Paleo Diet is gluten free and is low in starches and sugars. It’s a requirement for clients wanting to work with me as it can change so many things so quickly. Please check out my DVD on The Diet For Human Beings. You can buy a hard copy or a digital download. Thanks!
